Helping People From the "Start"

In January 2006, the Foundation received approval from the Massachusetts Department of Career Services to begin providing "Skillstart" services to people residing in Lowell and Lawrence. Skillstart is a program designed to provide people who recently began receiving public assistance short term intensive skills training. The Foundation will provide Leadership, Occupational skills training in Early Childhood Education and Introduction to GED/ABE training over a 20 day period.

Helping Children with Autism

The Foundation in partnership with CLASS Inc., ImajineThat, and Little Sprouts Child Enrichment Centers received an innovation grant from the newly created Massachusetts Division of Autism. The innovation grant will provide memberships to ImajineThat for families, funding for adaptive equipment at ImajineThat, parent trainings and training for Little Sprouts teachers on effective practices when working with children with Autism.

New Cable TV Channel

The Leadership and Literacy Foundation is working with the Methuen Cable TV Channel to have a monthly literacy show. The first few episodes will be a Reading Rainbow where an adult will read books to children in the studio. Then the literacy specialist will talk on camera about the skills kids are developing during the reading. The show will also conduct a home literacy evaluation by going to local resident's homes and making recommendations on how to improve their environment to support literacy for their children.

The first two shows will be recorded on May 9, 2005.
